Look past the monthly figure. Compare what you would spend over the years you expect to use something, what you keep if you stop paying, and how much control each option gives you.
Questions to ask
- What happens if I cancel? Do you keep access to your files and features, or lose everything?
- How long will I use it? Short projects favour subscriptions. Long use often favours buying.
- Can I repair or move it? Owned tools can be serviced, lent or sold.
- Do updates matter? Some software truly improves. Some just changes.
When subscribing makes sense
You need something briefly, it updates constantly in useful ways, or it includes services such as storage that cost money to run.
When owning makes sense
You will use it for years, the core features are stable, and losing access would hurt.
